Green politician Trittin leaves the Bundestag in January
"At the beginning of January, I will resign my seat in the Bundestag," Trittin announced to Der Spiegel. On Tuesday afternoon, he informed the Green parliamentary group of his decision.
He had already decided at the last parliamentary elections that this would be his last candidacy. "Last summer, I then realized that I would have been a member of the Bundestag for 25 years in the autumn," said Trittin. "25 - that's a nice anniversary to say goodbye to."
Trittin is a representative of the left wing of the party and played a key role in shaping the course of the Greens for decades. The social scientist entered the state parliament of Lower Saxony in 1985 and twice became parliamentary group leader there before becoming Federal Council Minister in the red-green cabinet under the then Minister President of Lower Saxony Gerhard Schröder (SPD) in 1990. In 1994, he became spokesman for the Greens' federal executive for four years before moving to the federal government as Environment Minister.
Trittin had repeatedly caused debate by criticizing his party. At his farewell, he was conciliatory. "This party, this parliamentary group, has enabled me to become everything you can become as a Green," he told Der Spiegel. "I am leaving in peace and gratitude."

The Federal election occurs in January, marking the end of Trittin's parliamentary mandate. From his seat in the Bundestag, Green politician Jürgen Trittin announced his resignation in early January. Trittin's departure separates him from a legislative period spanning over two and a half decades in the Bundestag. As a prominent Green politician, Trittin had served in various roles, including as a minister in the red-green cabinet and spokesman for the Greens' federal executive. During his time in parliament, Trittin played a significant role in shaping the party's course and causing debates with his criticisms.
