Racism - Green politician reports new hostilities in front of constituency office

Green Party MP Jian Omar says he has been insulted again outside his constituency office in Moabit. As the police reported on Saturday, the 38-year-old said that a woman gave him the middle finger outside his office on Friday afternoon and smashed a glass of faeces on the sidewalk. The woman then walked away and no damage was done, the police reported. State security is investigating.

Omar, migration policy spokesman for his parliamentary group in the House of Representatives, had reported several incidents of hostility in recent weeks. His office was attacked with a hammer and smeared with faeces. He told the Tagesspiegel newspaper (Saturday) that the incidents had shocked him, although he had already experienced hostility during the 2021 election campaign.

On 30 October and 10 November, the same woman from the neighborhood hit the window of his office with a hammer. "We were shocked and thought the window was going to fall on us," said Omar. When he confronted the woman, she said: "Fucking greens and fucking foreigners too, they used to put people like you in gas chambers." A passer-by had heard the remark about the gas chambers and offered herself as a witness to the police. Because of the incidents, his office now closes earlier as soon as it gets dark.

The 38-year-old said about the consequences: "The number of hate messages increased after I made the attacks public. This is also often a topic in our parliament. Members of parliament report that they experience similar incidents but don't publish them because right-wing agitators then jump on the bandwagon." He had also received a death threat, Omar said.
