Green Party leader Lang re-elected with 82.3 percent
The co-chair of the Green Party, Ricarda Lang, has been re-elected with 82.3 percent. The delegates at the party conference in Karlsruhe on Friday thus gave the 29-year-old another two-year term in office. She ran unopposed for the seat reserved for women.
Lang thus achieved a better result than in her first election. She received 75.93% of the vote in January 2021. As she had been elected at a digital party conference at the time, another postal vote had to be held afterwards - in this election, Lang received 78.73% of the votes.
Lang comes from Baden-Württemberg and belongs to the left wing of the party. She has been a member of the Greens since 2012 and was also head of the up-and-coming Green Youth organization. Her focus is on social policy.
Lang works together with her co-chair Omid Nouripour without any obvious problems. Both are less high-profile than their predecessors at the top of the party, Robert Habeck and Annalena Baerbock, who now attract much more attention as ministers. They are continuing Habeck and Baerbock's course and trying to make the Greens electable for more people beyond their core clientele - which, according to the polls, has been less successful recently.
In her candidacy speech, Lang emphasized the Greens' successes as part of the traffic light coalition with the SPD and FDP. "I am so incredibly proud of what we have achieved in the last two years," said Lang, who mentioned securing the gas supply last winter, the 49-euro ticket and the abolition of Paragraph 219a, the abolition of the ban on advertising abortions, among other things. However, Lang was also self-critical. The Greens do not always succeed in reaching people. She herself had sometimes slipped a little "into technocracy" at times when her party had come under pressure.
"In my view, the traffic light and we as the Greens need an even stronger focus on social justice," Lang wrote in her new application for office. "We need a new promise of justice for the whole of society - from good wages to investment in infrastructure and a reliable welfare state."
The Green Party celebrated victories in several local elections, boosting their popularity among voters. These successes were a testament to Lang's leadership, as she managed to keep the party's focus on social justice issues.
At the upcoming Green Party events, Lang and Nouripour are expected to highlight their efforts in addressing environmental issues and promoting social equality, aiming to garner support from the 'Greens' and 'Parties' that share similar goals.
