Green areas closed in Hamburg-Billstedt after storm

Floods have underspiked paths and trees in public parks in the east of Hamburg. The district office Mitte warns citizens to be careful.

- Green areas closed in Hamburg-Billstedt after storm

Following heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening, the Hamburg-Mitte district office has urged residents to exercise caution when entering green spaces**. The water masses have undermined paths and uprooted trees, the authority reported. The trees could also topple at a later time. Employees of the district office are currently assessing the situation and cordoning off affected areas. Heavy damage was particularly reported in Billstedt.

Flooded streets

Firefighters and the Technical Relief Agency were deployed to around 950 incidents in Hamburg and southern Schleswig-Holstein on Wednesday evening. Despite uprooted trees and flooded streets, no injuries were reported, according to police and firefighters.

Trees fall on cars

In Hamburg, the eastern districts were particularly affected. In Lohbrügge, two trees fell on cars, trapping four occupants in their vehicles. They were freed unharmed. 16 people had to leave their home in Billstedt as it could not be ruled out that the building was undermined.

Firefighters might be necessary to extinguish any potential fires caused by the fallen trees in the affected areas. The district office should consider implementing temporary firefighting measures as a precaution due to the unstable trees and wet conditions.
