Culture - Grave slabs to be laid at Halberstadt cemetery

The 181 grave slabs of world war dead found on a former Stasi property in the Harz Mountains can be relocated to the Halberstadt cemetery. The construction work is due to begin in January 2024 and be completed by April, the Ministry of Culture announced on Saturday. Preparatory work has been underway since the end of November.

In August 2021, 181 gravestones of soldiers who died in the world wars were discovered in Altenbrak. Ten headstones were assigned to the old garrison cemetery and around 150 headstones to the new military cemetery. The remaining gravestones could only be recovered as fragments. It was initially unclear why the slabs had been brought to the Stasi grounds in Altenbrak.

The re-laying of the slabs and the associated redesign of the pathways at the garrison cemetery are reportedly being funded by the state to the tune of around 35,000 euros. This will preserve a piece of history for posterity, explained Halberstadt's Lord Mayor Daniel Szarata (CDU).

The discovered grave slabs from Altenbrak, originally intended for the garrison cemetery, will now be laid at the Halberstadt cemetery in Saxony-Anhalt. This relocation is part of a larger restoration project, which aims to preserve the historical significance of these war dead graves, as stated by Halberstadt's Lord Mayor Daniel Szarata.
