Grant for the Nibelungen Festival
With 21,000 visitors, the Nibelungen Festival in Worms had an occupancy rate of 90 percent this year - now the Rhineland-Palatinate state government is increasing the subsidy. The Ministry of Culture is prepared to increase funding from 680,000 euros to 750,000 euros from next year, announced Culture Minister Katharina Binz (Greens) on Tuesday. "The rising costs for technology, security, energy and personnel are also causing problems for those responsible for the Nibelungen Festival," she emphasized.
Binz called the festival "something very special and unique" in the federal state. "Far beyond the borders of Rhineland-Palatinate, people notice and discuss what can be experienced here on the stage at the cathedral in summer. Audiences come to Worms from near and far to experience this special cultural event."
The organizers around artistic director Nico Hofmann have already announced the play "The Diplomat" for next year. The spectacle from July 12 to 28, 2024 in the open-air area in front of the cathedral will also deal with the question of how to prevent a war that nobody actually wants and yet seems unavoidable.
"The Diplomat" is written by Feridun Zaimoglu and Günter Senkel - the duo celebrated a great success in Worms a few years ago with "Siegfried's Heirs". The production is to be directed by Swiss director Roger Vontobel, whose production of "hildensaga" received much applause last year. The play focuses on Dietrich von Bern, one of the most famous legendary figures of the German High and Late Middle Ages.
The Nibelungen Festival, which is receiving an increased subsidy, is a prominent event in the Theater scene of Rhineland-Palatinate. Next year's festival, featuring the play "The Diplomat," is expected to attract audiences from beyond the festival's borders, turning Worms into a cultural hub during summer.
