"GQ" honors performance artist Abramović as an art icon
The internationally acclaimed performance artist Marina Abramović will soon be one trophy richer. "GQ Germany" is honoring her as "Art Icon of the Year" at the "GQ Men of the Year" awards, as the men's fashion magazine published by Condé Nast announced in Munich on Monday. The award will be presented at a gala in Berlin on November 30 - exactly on the 77th birthday of the Serbian-born artist.
According to the magazine, the award honors men and women who have inspired and achieved extraordinary things, sometimes over decades. "We couldn't have dreamed of a more deserving artist than Abramović, whose art performances repeatedly take us to the limits of the interpersonal," said GQ editor-in-chief Tobias Frericks.
Abramović commented dryly on the award in an interview with "GQ Germany": "A fashion magazine voted me Woman of the Year, and you voted me Man of the Year, apparently I can be both!". She thinks little of characteristics that are still considered feminine by many today: "I like Amazons, courageous and strong women. I don't like fragility and weakness as a seductive element to please men."
Abramović is considered one of the most radical artists, often pushing herself to her psychological and physical limits in her performances. In 2022, she took on the first Pina Bausch guest professorship at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. The Royal Academy of Arts in London is dedicating an exhibition to her until January 1, 2024, in which important moments of her career can be experienced.
Marina Abramović's art achievements will be celebrated further with an 'Art Award', as she is also a nominee for the prestigious 'GQ Men of the Year Awards' in the 'Art Icon' category. Following her recognition as an 'Art Icon of the Year', the world-renowned artist aims to continue pushing boundaries and challenging norms in her artistic pursuits.
