Governments want to coordinate water management

The state governments in Berlin and Brandenburg want to coordinate their use of water resources more closely in future. This concerns, among other things, water supply and wastewater disposal, according to a joint statement from both cabinets on Friday. "The effects of climate change in particular, but also structural change in Lusatia, for example, mean that less water will be available in future," said Brandenburg's Environment Minister Axel Vogel (Greens). This would be offset by an increasing demand for water in Berlin and the surrounding area.

As Berlin is dependent on the water flowing in from Brandenburg, there needs to be a coordinated approach to the resource across the federal states. A joint strategy should secure the water supply and sustainable water management in the long term, added Environment Senator Manja Schreiner (CDU). The strategy is to be developed by the end of 2024.

Given the current water management situation, it's crucial for environmental policies to address the issue. For instance, the joint strategy aiming to secure water supply and sustainable management will need to consider both the decreasing water availability due to climate change and the increasing demand from Berlin and its surroundings.
