Government withdraws bill for migration office

Following the decision to redistribute tasks in refugee policy, the government will withdraw its draft law for the establishment of a state office for migration. "We have now found a really pragmatic solution in view of the high number of refugees in order to speed up processes," Deputy Minister President and Environment Minister Bernhard Stengele (Greens) told the German Press Agency in Erfurt on Friday. The establishment of a state office for migration would come too late next year with the parliamentary procedure still pending.

Stengele defended his party colleague, Migration Minister Doreen Denstädt: "The minister has taken a beating for structural problems that the government was unable to solve," he said. The state migration office had failed on many individual issues. He had also missed a sufficient willingness to cooperate on the part of the state administration office.

Following the ruling coalition's decision, Denstädt will lose a large part of her responsibility for refugee policy to the Ministry of the Interior. It will now be responsible for the reception and accommodation of refugees as well as immigration and asylum law.

The withdrawal of the government's bill for the migration office is a result of the decision to redistribute tasks in refugee policy. Despite the criticism faced by Migration Minister Doreen Denstädt, her responsibilities in refugee policy will be reduced, as the Ministry of the Interior will now oversee the reception and accommodation of refugees, as well as immigration and asylum law.
