Government: German tourist killed in Paris knife attack

The attacker killed the German with a knife near the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Saturday evening. According to Darmanin, he also injured a Frenchman aged around 60 and a foreign tourist with a hammer. The Minister of the Interior did not disclose the nationality of the injured tourist.

According to police sources, the attacker is said to have shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) during the attack. The Frenchman, who was born in 1997, was arrested and the national anti-terror prosecutor's office took over the investigation.

According to Interior Minister Darmanin, the attacker had a criminal record. He had been sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 for planning another attack. Police sources had previously claimed that the alleged perpetrator, who was born in France, suffered from mental health problems and was known to be a radical Islamist. He had stated that he could not bear to see Muslims killed in the world.
