Parliament - Government establishes staff unit for the prevention of anti-Semitism

The black-green NRW state government wants to set up a staff unit to prevent anti-Semitism, extremism, racism and hostility towards democracy. The coronavirus pandemic, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the terrorist attacks by Islamist Hamas against Israel have contributed to anti-democratic sentiments reaching the heart of society, said Culture and Science Minister Ina Brandes (CDU) in the state parliament on Thursday. The establishment of the staff unit would enable the direct and immediate implementation of necessary measures.

Brandes rejected accusations by the SPD that the new staff unit was intended to disempower the State Center for Political Education. The tasks of political education would not be affected. In fact, the state center would be strengthened with an additional position. The area of remembrance culture would also remain at the state center. However, the department is to be more closely interlinked with the topics of flight, expulsion and resettlement.

The state's anti-Semitism commissioner, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, welcomed the planned establishment of the staff unit. She sees many synergies with the work of her office and wants to work closely with the office.

The SPD opposition, however, accused the state government of wanting to dismantle the State Center for Political Education and outsource a large part of the staff to the Ministry of Culture and Science. The black-green coalition should abandon its restructuring plans in their entirety and keep all of the advisors at the state center.
