Actress Angela Winkler has been awarded this year's Götz George Prize. The 79-year-old is characterized by an "irrepressible joy in acting" and "a light-footed approach to her own great skill", the jury announced in Berlin on Saturday, adding: "This artist lets her soul speak." The award, which is endowed with 10,000 euros, is given to actors and actresses who have made their mark on the film, television and theater landscape with their artistic work.

Winkler was born in Templin in the Uckermark region in 1944 and now lives with her husband in Berlin and France, according to the press release. She had her first engagement at the Westfälisches Landestheater in Castrop-Rauxel. According to the Götz George Foundation, she became a star through her title role in the 1975 film "The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum". The actress is also known from the Oscar-winning book adaptation "The Tin Drum" and the Netflix series "Dark".

The artist has already won numerous awards. In 2019, she received the Acting Award for her performance in the theater.

The Götze George Award was created in 2017 and is named after the actor Götz George (1938-2016). Previous winners include Matthias Habich, Gudrun Ritter, Karin Baal, Margit Carstensen and Peter Striebeck.
