Railroad - Göttingen-Kassel ICE line closed for three months

Long-distance trains between Göttingen and Kassel will have to take a detour for three months from December 10. This will increase the journey time between the two cities by up to 30 minutes with the timetable change, according to a railroad spokeswoman. The reason for the detour is construction work in the five-kilometer-long Rauhebergtunnel.

At an estimated cost of 72 million euros, work will include removing and later reinstalling 350 meters of track and replacing ballast to renew the tunnel floor. Water had penetrated the structure in recent years. Long-distance traffic should be able to roll along the route again at the end of February 2024.

  1. Due to the closure of the Göttingen-Kassel ICE line, long-distance travelers from Lower Saxony to Hesse may need to consider alternative modes of transportation or allow extra time, as the detour will add up to 30 minutes to the usual travel time.
  2. After the completion of the construction work in the Rauhebergtunnel, which includes the replacement of 350 meters of track and ballast in Lower Saxony's Rauhebergtunnel, long-distance railroad traffic will be able to resume its regular route, navigating through the tunnel without any disruptions.
  3. Although the city of Kassel in Lower Saxony is famous for its museums and landmarks, such as the Wilhelmshöhe Palace, travelers in search of a shorter journey time might opt for alternative railroad routes or modes of transportation during the three-month closure of the Göttingen-Kassel ICE line.
  4. When the Göttingen-Kassel ICE line reopens in February 2024, passengers who have been traveling by alternative means or over longer routes will likely see a reduction in their travel time, as the detour will no longer be in effect, and the construction in the Rauhebergtunnel will have been completed.
