Gotham Awards: Hüller and Rogowski go away empty-handed
German actors Sandra Hüller (45, "Toni Erdmann") and Franz Rogowski (37, "Undine") came away empty-handed at the Gotham Awards on Monday evening (local time) in New York. Rogowski was nominated in the leading actor category for the relationship drama "Passages", but was defeated by the US-American Lily Gladstone in the road movie "The Unknown Country". Ten actors and actresses were in the running in this category.
Hüller had a chance of winning a Gotham trophy with her supporting role in the drama "The Zone of Interest". Juliette Binoche ("Beloved Cook"), Penélope Cruz ("Ferrari") and Ryan Gosling ("Barbie") were also nominated in this category. The award went to the American Charles Melton for his supporting role in the drama "May December" by director Todd Haynes.
In "The Zone of Interest", Hüller plays the wife of concentration camp commander Rudolf Höß (Christian Friedel), who lives with his family in a luxurious house right next to the Auschwitz concentration camp.
The legal drama "Anatomy of a Case", in which Sandra Hüller plays a writer accused of murdering her husband in their shared home, won two awards (for screenplay and best international film). The drama by French director Justine Triet was this year's winning film at the Cannes Festival.
"Past Lives" honored as "Best Film"
The prize for "Best Film" went to the romance "Past Lives", the feature film debut of South Korean-Canadian filmmaker Celine Song. Outside of the competition, several special prizes were awarded, including for "Killers of the Flower Moon", "Barbie" and "Maestro".

The Gotham Awards, which have been presented since 1991, are regarded as the prelude to the trophy season, which ends in March with the Oscars. Numerous stars attended the ceremony, including Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper, Carey Mulligan Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig, Penélope Cruz and Natalie Portman.
The awards are decided by a small group of critics and filmmakers. Previous Gotham Award winners, which later went on to win Oscars, include films such as "Moonlight", "Spotlight", "Birdman" and "Nomadland".
Despite Sandra Hüller and Franz Rogowski's notable performances in their respective films, they missed out on Gotham Awards wins. The romance "Past Lives" was honored as the "Best Film" at the Gotham Awards instead, marking the feature film debut of South Korean-Canadian filmmaker Celine Song. The ceremony was also attended by high-profile figures like Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.
