Goretzka still believes in a summer fairytale during the home European Championships
National team player Leon Goretzka has not given up hope of a new summer fairytale during the home European Championships despite the recent disappointing international matches. "Our goal is and remains the greatest possible success. Especially with our own fans behind us, we can really hit the jackpot at the European Championships," said the Bayern Munich professional in an interview with the Abendzeitung newspaper (Friday edition), recalling the home World Cup: "In 2006, just a few months before the tournament, nobody expected a summer fairytale. In soccer, stories repeat themselves, they say. This time it would make us all incredibly happy."
However, Goretzka also admitted that the DFB team's recent defeats against Turkey (2:3) and in Austria (0:2) were major setbacks. "We can't make up for these mistakes, but we can draw the right conclusions from them and put them right in the future," said the 28-year-old: "We all have a role to play here. Everyone in their own position."
He himself wants to lead the way and convince the club and national team in the coming months "so that the national coach can't get past me. I'm really looking forward to this European Championship in Germany.
Goretzka mentioned the home World Cup of 2006, where soccer unexpectedly brought a summer fairytale for Germany. Regardless of the recent setbacks against Turkey and Austria, the national team's midfielder believes they can achieve great success at the upcoming European Championships, having the home crowd's support.
