Bundesliga - Göppingen handball team brings in Matschke as Baur's successor

Bundesliga handball club Frisch Auf Göppingen has found a successor to Markus Baur. Benjamin Matschke will take over as coach in July 2024, the club announced on Thursday. The 41-year-old has signed a contract until 2026. Matschke was most recently coach of HSG Wetzlar until November 2022.

"In Ben Matschke, Frisch Auf has been able to sign a young, modern coach who is hungry for success and ideally meets Frisch Auf's future requirements profile," said Managing Director Gerd Hofele. Hofele also announced that a rejuvenation process was imminent due to a significantly reduced overall budget in the 2024/25 season.

Just under two weeks ago, Göppingen announced that the contract with former world champion Baur would not be extended. "We deliberately chose Ben Matschke at this early stage so that we can start planning the squad for the coming years together immediately," said Sporting Director Christian Schöne: "His meticulousness and expertise in working with and developing young players fits in very well with our future direction."
