"Good trend": KSC breathes a sigh of relief in relegation battle after victory

Second-division club Karlsruher SC gained some breathing space just in time for the winter break. The win against SV Elversberg was deserved, but also somehow typical of the first half of the season.

Bundesliga 2 - "Good trend": KSC breathes a sigh of relief in relegation battle after victory

One week before Christmas, Karlsruher SC can breathe a sigh of relief in the relegation battle in the 2nd Bundesliga. Coach Christian Eichner's team deservedly won 3:2 (2:1) against SV Elversberg in a varied game on Sunday and moved up to twelfth place on the last matchday of the year. After goals from Dzenis Burnic (6th minute), Budu Siwsiwadse (16th) and Igor Matanovic (53rd) and five games in a row without defeat, KSC ended the preliminary round four points clear of the relegation places.

"The main thing is that we won," said midfielder Paul Nebel. The team has now fought its way into the season. "That's definitely a good trend." They will then attack in the second half of the season. Goalkeeper Patrick Drewes explained that having 21 points in the account at the end of the year and having moved up a few places in the table gives "a good feeling for the winter break".

After that, it's important to "stay on the pedal", said coach Christian Eichner. His team impressed offensively against the newly-promoted team, but made a number of serious mistakes in defense. The game was therefore a reflection of almost the entire first half of the season. Elversberg, for whom Bayern loanee Paul Wanner (29) and Luca Schnellbacher (63) scored in front of 23,654 spectators at Wildpark, are in a strong ninth place in the table for a newcomer.

KSC, who were without regulars Marcel Franke, Marvin Wanitzek and captain Jerôme Gondorf due to illness, started strongly. However, weaknesses in defense allowed Elversberg to get back into the game. In the second half, which was turbulent at times, both teams only scored on aluminum.

"It's been the case throughout the first half of the season that we seem to have games under control and then we start to falter a bit when we concede goals," explained Karlsruhe goalkeeper Patrick Drewes. "That's basically what happened today."
