Retail trade - Good response to open Sunday sales
According to the Berlin-Brandenburg Trade Association (HBB), the third Sunday of Advent, which was open for business in many places, was well received. "If as much comes in next week as this weekend, then Christmas business could end with a slight plus," said the deputy managing director of the HBB, Wolfgang Kampmeier, to the German Press Agency. Exact sales figures have not yet been released.
"In Brandenburg alone, 20 cities and municipalities were open. On average, the response was better than expected," he continued. "In Berlin, the mood was even better, there was a greater influx than on the first Sunday that Advent sales were open."
Purchasing behavior was similar in both countries, Kampmeier explained on Sunday: "In both countries, books, peripheral ranges in bookshops and concert tickets were particularly popular." However, sales of electronics lagged behind. This pre-Christmas period has also seen a strong increase in the purchase of concert, festival and theater tickets compared to last year.

The open Sundays in retail trade, led by the Berlin-Brandenburg Trade Association, have shown promising results, particularly on the third Sunday of Advent. This was evident in Brandenburg, where 20 cities and municipalities saw better-than-expected responses. In Berlin, the response was even more significant, with a higher influx compared to the first Sunday of Advent sales. The German Press Agency reported these findings from Wolfgang Kampmeier, the deputy managing director of the HBB.
Furthermore, the purchasing behavior was consistent across both countries during this period. Books, peripheral ranges in bookshops, and concert tickets saw significant sales. However, electronics sales lagged behind. The retail trade sector has also witnessed a notable increase in concert, festival, and theater ticket sales compared to the previous year.
These weekend sales have resonated positively within the Retail trade association, signifying a potentially solid finish to the pre-Christmas sales period. This trend could result in a slight plus for the overall Christmas business.
