Authorities in Brandenburg are set to discuss potential plans of action following the discovery of dead fish in the Oder River and the spread of toxic golden algae. This comes after two years since the river experienced a major environmental disaster.
On Wednesday, officials from the Environment Department will discuss possible steps based on the recent measurements, according to the State Office for the Environment.
Reports of dead fish surfaced at the German-Polish border river, with the toxic alga responsible for a large fish kill in 2022 spreading significantly. On Tuesday, dozens of dead fish were spotted at the winter harbor in Frankfurt (Oder), including zander and pike that measured up to 60 centimeters long.
The State Office for the Environment revealed that the golden alga Prymnesium parvum had been undergoing a mass development for several days. High salt content, low water levels, elevated temperatures, and the poison issued by the alga were identified as the main factors behind the mass fish kill in the Oder in August 2022.
Authorities in Brandenburg are tasked with collecting and reviewing data on water quality for the Oder's German section via automated measuring stations. Similarly, authorities in Poland intend to tackle the growth of golden alga.
