Bundesliga 2 - Goal debate, slapstick and HSV comeback in the Hamburg derby

Fabian Hürzeler of FC St. Pauli was annoyed after the draw in the city derby against Hamburger SV, and not just because of the missed victory. The coach reacted with incomprehension to the debate surrounding the two goals scored by the Kiez club in the 2:2 (2:0) draw, which some people considered controversial. "You can make it up however you want," said the 30-year-old on Friday after the match in the 2nd Bundesliga regarding the discussion about the second goal.

The legality of both goals was discussed at the post-match press conference. When HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes scored the curious own goal to make it 2-0 to the hosts, it was questioned that two St. Pauli players were irregularly standing on the penalty area line when the kick was taken and that neither referee Felix Zwayer nor the video assistant had intervened. Hürzeler saw "a lot of subjective perception" in the debate. On the opposing side, HSV coach Tim Walter said he would have to look at the goals again "in peace".

At the corner kick before the first goal, the HSV professionals had denounced a push against Jonas Meffert. "That's a normal tackle that happens what feels like eighty times in midfield and isn't penalized, so I don't see it as a clear wrong decision," said Hürzeler. "If anyone deserved to leave the pitch as the winner, it was us," said the coach.

The 110th city derby between the two clubs offered many highlights. Above all, the curious own goal by Heuer Fernandes to make it 2:0 for the home side will live long in the memory. After a pass from Guilherme Ramos to the goalkeeper, the ball bounced just in front of the goal. The goalkeeper tried to shoot the ball out of the penalty area - but the ball flew into his own net (27th minute).

"Of course that's extremely unfortunate. I had imagined it differently. But that happens in soccer," said the 31-year-old after his first own goal in his 180th second division match. His coach took the unusual scene with humor and called Fernandes' mishap a "slapstick goal" on TV channel Sky Heuer.

After a weak first half for the visitors in their own city, the coach was "very, very happy" about the point and praised the comeback in the match. In the increasing snow flurries at the Millerntor, the visitors seemed to cope better with the slippery surface.

On the other side, the disappointment was great. "We're very frustrated," said captain Jackson Irvine, who had put the Kiez club ahead (15th). However, Robert Glatzel (58) and Immanuel Pherai (60) equalized with a double strike in front of 29,153 spectators. As a result, HSV are still three points behind the unbeaten Kiez club.

The league leaders were also able to highlight positive aspects of the match. "But I'm very proud of the players, we're still unbeaten and we're still moving in the right direction," said Irvine. His coach Hürzeler took a similar view: "You can be disappointed with the result after the draw, but not with the performance. Like his captain, he spoke of a "step in the right direction".
