Berlin is gearing up to host some global sports events the following summer, joining a significant event in Germany. The city has been chosen as an extra location for the World University Games, the premier event in international university sports, as reported by the Senate. The events will happen from July 16 to 27, 2025, in the Ruhr region, with around 8,500 athletes from 150 countries participating in 18 sports. The swimming, volleyball, and diving competitions will be held in Berlin.

Düsseldorf had to back out as one of the venues due to high expenses. The organizers are the German University Sports Federation (adh) and the International University Sports Federation FISU. The event is financially backed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the federal government.

Senator for Interior and Sports, Iris Spranger (SPD), mentioned, "It's natural for the sports hub of Berlin to support the organizers and benefactors, allowing swimming, diving, and volleyball competitions to take place here as well. Berlin has the facilities to jump in even with this tight schedule."

Germany, being the host nation, will undoubtedly have a strong presence during the World University Games. The swimming, volleyball, and diving competitions, being held in Berlin, will provide Germany with an opportunity to showcase its sports facilities and talents.
