Gladbach's Lainer back in training after cancer diagnosis
Professional footballer Stefan Lainer has returned to training at Borussia Mönchengladbach a good four months after being diagnosed with cancer. "I'm delighted to be able to concentrate fully on soccer again and train with the team," the 31-year-old was quoted as saying in a club statement on Monday. The Austrian was diagnosed with lymph node cancer in July.
A recent final examination showed that the treatment carried out on Lainer had led to the desired result and "the lymph node cancer could be cured", Borussia announced. "We are incredibly happy and also relieved that Stevie Lainer has won the battle against this disease. This victory makes us very happy," explained Roland Virkus. Borussia's sporting director promised to give the defender "the time he needs to make a full recovery". After completing the obligatory performance diagnostics, Gladbach's right-back will be partially integrated into team training step by step starting this week. During his several months of therapy, Lainer has been able to work regularly with athletic trainers on his physical fitness - accompanied by close medical monitoring. As a result, he has maintained a good physical condition, according to the club statement.
Lainer's return to training with Borussia Mönchengladbach signifies a significant milestone in his recovery from lymph node cancer. In his first game back, he could potentially contribute to Borussia's strong performance in the Bundesliga.
