State Statistical Office - Gingerbread and honey cake production: just under one kilo per inhabitant
North Rhine-Westphalia remained an important location for German gingerbread and honey cake production last year. At 17,900 tons, the share of baked goods produced in NRW in the total amount produced nationwide in 2022 was 20.5 percent, as reported by the State Statistical Office in Düsseldorf on Thursday. In purely mathematical terms, this means that around one kilogram of gingerbread and honey cake was produced for every inhabitant of Germany's most populous federal state. The annual production volume in NRW fluctuates greatly. In 2019 it was 19,600 tons, in 2021 16,600 tons.
In the first three quarters of 2023, the 15 companies with at least 20 employees produced 13,300 tons of gingerbread and honey cake, roughly the same amount as in the same period last year. Due to higher prices, however, their turnover rose by just under 11% to a good 59 million euros. In 2022, the statisticians had counted 17 businesses.
