Berlin's Senator for Economics, Franziska Giffey, anticipates making a determination in the near future regarding the retention of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof's financial hardship store in Spandau. "I have conferred with the owners of the sites on the closure list," she declared following a meeting with representatives from the sector, districts, and several unions about Berlin's retail development. "We're presently working to ascertain if it's possible to bring a location back from the closure list. This should become clearer in the next few days."

Giffey Seeks Decision on Store's Future

Aside from Spandau, the locations in the Ringcenter in Lichtenberg and in Tempelhof are likewise on the closure list. Giffey had previously revealed at the end of April that discussions would continue regarding the preservation of the department store in Spandau. "If that doesn't work, then it's about promptly devising alternative use concepts," Giffey remarked on Monday.

The property owners aim to avoid vacancies and facilitate swift reuse. Giffey expressed great confidence that the owners desire a positive outcome. "Thus, the prospect of procuring the site for us neither from a financial nor a strategic standpoint is not an option." She disclosed conversations with the districts about going to great lengths to satisfy the specifications for other uses if necessary, Giffey said.
