Repeat election - Giffey announces "short but intensive" election campaign
Following the Federal Constitutional Court's ruling on the partial rerun of the Bundestag elections in Berlin, SPD state chairwoman Franziska Giffey has announced a "short but intensive" election campaign. "As the SPD Berlin, we have already been preparing for the upcoming election campaign over the past few weeks," she explained on Tuesday.
"The goal of all democratic parties must be to work for the highest possible voter turnout so that Berlin does not lose any votes in the Bundestag," said Giffey, who is Senator for Economic Affairs in the black-red Senate. "That is why we are asking all Berliners who are affected by the re-run of the election: Exercise your right to vote, give your vote to a democratic party."
The AfD state and parliamentary group leader Kristin Brinker assessed the Karlsruhe ruling positively. "In a functioning democracy, election results must be free from any doubt about how they came about," she explained. "As this was not the case in Berlin in 2021, I expressly welcome the ruling of the Federal Constitutional Court, just as I did the ruling of the Berlin State Constitutional Court at the time."
On Tuesday, the Federal Constitutional Court ruled that the 2021 Bundestag election in Berlin would have to be partially repeated due to numerous glitches. Last February, the election to the Berlin House of Representatives had already been completely repeated following a ruling by the state constitutional court. Like the federal election, it had taken place on September 26, 2021 and was also marked by glitches and electoral errors.
