Giant Christmas tree made from more than 1000 spruces
In Dortmund, a giant Christmas tree will once again be the focal point of the Christmas market from November 23. The assembly of the giant, made up of more than 1000 red spruce trees, on Hansaplatz is almost three weeks away. The trees from the Sauerland region, which were planted especially for this purpose, are currently being attached to a huge support frame. They will later be decorated with 48,000 lights, baubles and a 200-kilo angel on top. The coniferous colossus, which is 45 meters high and weighs 40 tons, is advertised by the city as the "largest Christmas tree in the world".
In previous years, up to 1700 trees were used, explains site manager Andreas Kochon. But the tree has by no means become thinner, he emphasizes. In fact, it is due to fire safety that the spruce carpet only begins at a slightly greater height. The base of the tree will be covered with green panels so that this cannot be seen from a distance.
Customs officials may carefully inspect the imported lights and decorations to ensure they comply with the country's regulations. The cost of maintaining the fixed LED lights for the giant Christmas tree is significantly lower compared to traditional bulbs.
