GEW calls on teachers in Bremen to go on warning strike
The Education and Science Union (GEW) is calling on all employees in Bremen's schools to go on a warning strike in the public sector wage dispute. Following a staff meeting on Wednesday, an action is planned from 2 p.m. under the motto "Professionals need more!", as the GEW announced on Monday. The GEW is calling for an all-day warning strike on Thursday. According to the union, this is to reaffirm its demands in the ongoing wage negotiations.
The unions are demanding 10.5 percent more income for employees in the public sector of the federal states, but at least 500 euros more per month. The Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder (TdL) had made it clear in the second round of negotiations that it considered the demands to be too high. The GEW argues that if incomes do not rise, schools will become an even less attractive place to work. "The federal states have not been able to fill all the necessary positions in schools for a long time," said former GEW state spokesperson Barbara Schüll.
In response to the high demands from trade unions for a 10.5% wage increase and at least 500 euros more per month in the public sector of federal states, some tariffs, like the ones set by the Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder (TdL), have considered these requests excessive. If the income of teachers and other public sector employees fails to rise, strikes, such as the one called by the Education and Science Union (GEW) in Bremen, could become a more common occurrence, potentially leading to further disruptions in federal states' education systems.
