Education - GEW calls on teachers and educators to go on warning strikes
The Education and Science Union(GEW) is once again calling on teachers and university employees in Saxony-Anhalt to go on warning strike on Tuesday. According to the GEW, there is to be an all-day warning strike in view of the employers' blockade in the collective bargaining negotiations for the public service of the federal states. Members in the independent city of Magdeburg, the districts of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, Stendal, Börde, Jerichower Land, Salzlandkreis and Harz have been called out. A rally is planned for midday (11.30 a.m.) on the cathedral square in Magdeburg.
"Unfortunately, a reasonable employer offer for a substantial pay rise is still missing," explained GEW state director Eva Gerth. "From the GEW's point of view, this shows a lack of appreciation for the employees. This is another reason why the willingness to strike is very high and will remain so."
The GEW also called on employees of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, who fall under the scope of the collective agreement of the federal states, and students to take part in the warning strike on Tuesday.
The unions are demanding a 10.5 percent pay rise for employees, but at least 500 euros more per month, as well as a collective agreement for all student employees. The collective agreement is to run for one year. The next round of collective bargaining in the public sector of the federal states is scheduled for December 7 and 8 in Potsdam.
