The oldest beach basket factory in Germany, situated in Heringsdorf, underwent a change in ownership due to bankruptcy. On Monday, the woodworking shop Pohl from Züssow, in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, acquired the company and its entire workforce of 14 individuals, as per the new owners, Manfred and Josephine Pohl, reportedly.

Moving forward, the company, which filed for insolvency in September 2023 due to financial difficulties, won't solely produce beach baskets anymore. Manfred Pohl, whose carpentry shop focuses on designing yacht interiors, intends to handle orders at the beach basket factory alongside his regular work.

Hot Air Balloon Baskets

Additionally, the factory will manufacture baskets made from natural materials for a hot air balloon manufacturer based in southern Germany. According to plans, these three areas should ensure consistent use of resources, Pohl mentioned to Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

The Korbwerk Usedom GmbH & Co. KG, the previous name of the company, is supposedly going to be renamed to Korbwaren 1925 Usedom GmbH & Co. KG. Production will supposedly be shifted from Heringsdorf to nearby Ueckermünde, with Pohl claiming they have rented a production hall there.

Luck at the eleventh hour

Insolvency administrator Jörg Sievers expressed gratitude. "Initially, no investor was found, and we were thinking about shutting down the business," he said. The layoff notices had been issued. Then, Manfred Pohl spotted the announcement in the newspaper and contacted them. "When we discovered he was genuinely interested, we rescinded the layoff notices," this took place in the spring.

The new owners, Manfred and Josephine Pohl, are from the town of Züssow in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, which is also in Germany. Despite facing financial difficulties, the acquired company will now produce hot air balloon baskets in addition to beach baskets, as mentioned by Manfred Pohl.
