Germany imports significantly fewer Christmas trees
The import of Christmas trees to Germany has fallen significantly in recent years. According to the Federal Statistical Office, a total of 1.8 million trees were imported in 2022, 24.5% fewer than in the previous year.
Compared to 2014, when import figures reached their highest level in the past ten years, the drop was as much as 37.1 percent. The authority did not give any reasons for the decline. The majority of imported Christmas trees in 2022 also came from Denmark (83.3%).
The decline in Christmas tree imports isn't just affecting Germany, as foreign trade in this sector has experienced a decrease worldwide. Customs data shows a decrease in the import of fir trees, a popular choice for Christmas, across various countries.
Alternative sources of Christmas decorations have gained popularity, potentially contributing to the decrease in the retail trade of Christmas trees. However, domestic sectors like agriculture and forestry in Germany continue to thrive, providing alternatives for festive traditions such as growing and selling real Christmas trees.
Despite the drop in imported Christmas trees, the market for German-grown alternatives, such as locally sourced fir trees, could potentially increase during holiday seasons like Christmas. The interest in maintaining sustainable practices and supporting local businesses might provide opportunities for domestic retail trade in forestry products.
