German women's soccer team against Denmark for Olympic chance
The German women's national team face an important match against Denmark on Friday in Rostock (20:30/ZDF) on their way to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In the event of a defeat or a draw, the team of interim national coach Horst Hrubesch would no longer have a chance of qualifying for the Olympics. A win with just a one-goal difference would reduce their chances to a minimum.
This is because the German women's soccer team can only play for one of the two European Olympic places in the four-team final tournament of the Nations League at the end of February if they finish first in their group. In the event of a tie on points, the direct comparison and then the goal difference will decide.
The DFB team are currently in second place in their group with nine points, three points behind the leading Danes. After the 2-0 defeat in the first leg, Hrubesch's players will be aiming for a win with at least a two-goal difference against Denmark. They would then take the lead ahead of the final matchday and have the much-needed group win in their own hands in the final game in Wales on Tuesday.
The German women's National team, participating in the Nations League, needs to secure a win against Denmark with at least a two-goal difference to take the lead in their group. Should they succeed, they would greatly improve their chances of qualifying for the Olympic Games, as only the group leader can represent Europe in the four-team final tournament.
