Weather - German weather service expects icy conditions until the weekend
Drivers and pedestrians in Baden-Württemberg need to be careful on the roads until the weekend. The German Weather Service (DWD) in Stuttgart has predicted snow and icy conditions. A DWD spokesperson said on Thursday that Saturday and the south-eastern half of the state would be particularly affected. However, snowfall is also expected on Thursday and Friday. South of the Swabian Alb, freezing rain with black ice is possible until Friday morning.
By Friday morning, five centimetres of snow could fall in the south of the country from the High Rhine to Lake Constance, and up to 15 centimetres in congested areas of the Upper Black Forest and in the Allgäu. In the more northerly parts of the country, a few centimetres of snow may also accumulate above around 200 meters above sea level by Friday afternoon.
The highest temperatures on Saturday will be between 0 and -4 degrees. As a result, most of the snow will remain in the higher lowlands and in the mountains. The heaviest precipitation will be in the south-east, in the Allgäu and in Upper Swabia. The Rhine will mainly remain free of snow.
Drivers should also be vigilant on Sunday night. However, signs of the coming danger of slippery conditions could already be observed during the day. "Where the snow is melting, freezing wet conditions must be expected during the night," said the spokesperson. This applies to regions where the temperature rises during the day and falls below zero at night. This would mainly happen in Upper Swabia, on the Upper Rhine, on the Neckar and in Kraichgau.
Only Sunday has a small ray of hope: the day will remain mostly dry, said the meteorologist. In some places, the sun would even make an appearance. Highs would be -3 degrees in the Allgäu and up to +4 degrees on the Rhine. In the Black Forest and especially around the Feldberg, however, citizens should be prepared for strong winds, according to the DWD website.
