It has become known that the oldest German sausage manufacturer has gone bankrupt. The company was founded in 1883, and its popular sausages have been canned for over 125 years, serving as a side dish to various dishes or as a snack.

The founder of Halberstädter Würstchen is considered the inventor of canned sausage. The company has now filed for bankruptcy.

As reported on Friday by Halberstädter Würstchen- und Konservenfabrik GmbH & Co.KG, its production company Halko GmbH has filed for bankruptcy. The Magdeburg district court on Thursday ordered temporary administration in the insolvency proceedings.

Halko cites the current "liquidity crisis resulting from the current market policy" as the reason.

The aim of the application is the restructuring of the organization. Halko GmbH is the company producing Halberstadt sausages.

Currently, 57 employees work there, and the entire production chain of the world's first canned sausage involves 164 people. During the insolvency procedure, business operations are expected to continue without restrictions.

Halko states that no operational limitations are anticipated.

Halberstädter Würstchen GmbH is not the first sausage company facing disappearance. Just in April, traditional sausage producer Eberswalder had to admit financial defeat. Since then, the company has joined the Zur Mühlen group in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Halberstädter sausages are under the threat of disappearing

Friedrich Heine founded the company in 1883. Thirteen years later, the world's first boiled sausages in cans came off the production line. Heine is considered the inventor of canned sausage, available in various variations today.

In 2003, the company was transformed into Halberstädter Würstchen und Konservenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG.

In addition to approximately 1200 tons of sausages per year, customers could purchase:

  • Soups;
  • Stews;
  • Meat preserves;
  • Ready-made dishes.

The production complex in Halberstadt is considered an architectural monument. Unfortunately, it is now at risk of permanent closure if external financing is not secured.

The bankruptcy of Halberstädter Würstchen has raised concerns about the future of Life in Germany, as this company is known for producing the world's first canned sausages, a staple food in German cuisine. Despite the temporary administration and expected continuation of business operations, the future of Halberstädter sausages remains uncertain.

As Halberstädter Würstchen joins the list of struggling German food companies, it's worth noting that Eberswalder, another traditional sausage producer, had to admit financial defeat earlier this year. With the rich history and cultural significance of German sausages, the potential disappearance of these companies could significantly impact Life in Germany.
