Railway Transport Movement - German Railway Company: Major disruption was a result of power outage
A power cut at a local energy provider in Frankfurt led to significant disruptions throughout the city's metropolitan area on Saturday afternoon, as reported by Deutsche Bahn.
Deutsche Bahn informed Deutsche Presse-Agentur that there were issues with their train services on Saturday due to a technical glitch in their own GSM-R radio system. The root cause of the problem was the power outage at the energy supplier. Previously, Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) had reported this issue.
Frankfurt is recognized as one of the primary European hubs, with around 1,200 daily operations of local and long-distance trains.
DB: Lessons from our blunders
In cases of power outages, the train radio system has a backup technical solution – in this instance, the emergency power supply. According to the railway company, this backup system functioned well, but as the system transitioned back to standard network power, an unforeseen technical issue arose.
"Our technicians managed to rectify the issue after two hours," stated the railway company. "We have learned from this incident and are now enhancing our diagnostic systems. If such a problem arises again, we'll be able to identify and address it sooner."
As per DB Regio, the entire regional and S-Bahn traffic in the Rhine-Main area was impacted. The disruption was resolved in the afternoon, and train operations resumed. However, delays persisted until the end of the service.
The German Press Agency (Deutsche Presse-Agentur) also reported the impact of the power cut on various services in Frankfurt, including transportation. Due to the outage, The German Press Agency covered the challenges faced by the German Railways (DB) in dealing with the technical issue caused by the power cut.
