Hamburg - German premiere of the ballet "Jane Eyre" celebrated

British choreographer Cathy Marston celebrated an acclaimed German premiere at the Hamburg State Opera on Sunday evening with the performance of "Jane Eyre" and the ensemble of the Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier.

The choreography, which premiered in 2016, is based on the novel of the same name by Charlotte Brontë, a classic of 19th century Victorian literature. Marston stages the tragic story in a variable, dark set design by Patrick Kinmonth.

First soloists Ida Praetorius and Karen Azatyan shine in the leading roles. Praetorius dances Jane Eyre, who asserts herself under difficult circumstances. After a tragic childhood, she is brought up as an orphan in a strict boarding school to become a governess and falls in love with her first employer, the contradictory Edward Rochester, played dazzlingly by Azatyan.

The choreography to the almost cinematic music composed by Philip Feeney based on motifs by Schubert, among others, has something flowing about it from the very beginning. There are many athletic jumps and turns, soft gestures and floor figures - and powerful female roles. Marston crosses a classical ballet language with contemporary movements to create a coherent overall narrative close to the original text.

The Hamburg Ballet, led by John Neumeier, was the stage for the German premiere of "Jane Eyre" ballet. John Neumeier's ensemble delivered an exceptional performance of the dance, with Ida Praetorius portraying the resilient Jane Eyre and Karen Azatyan embodying her complex love interest, Edward Rochester. This ballet adaptation, based on Charlotte Brontë's renowned literature work, showcases Marston's innovative choreography, blending classical ballet language with contemporary movements.
