German drama "The Empress" wins International Emmy

The German historical drama "Die Kaiserin" has won the International Emmy for Best Drama Series. The Netflix series about Austria's former Empress Elisabeth beat productions from South Korea, Argentina and the UK in New York. This is the second time that the award in the main category of the television prize for non-US productions has gone to Germany, following the 2016 prize for "Deutschland 83".

The three other German nominees, however, came away empty-handed. "Nazi Hunters - Journey into Darkness" was beaten by the documentary "Mariupol: The People's Story" about the fate of war victims in Ukraine. "Classical Music under the Swastika - The Maestro and the Cellist of Auschwitz" was also named Best Cultural Program and "Meet... Anne Frank" as best factual program for children were also unable to win their categories.

The International Emmys are the worldwide offshoot and quasi the little sister of the main Emmy Awards on January 15, which is considered the most important TV and streaming award worldwide.

The German series "Die Kaiserin" triumphantly won the Television category's prestigious International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series, outshining contenders like "Money Heist" from Spain and "It's About Time" from the UK. Additionally, the International Emmy Awards, regarded as the lesser-known cousin of the influential Emmys held in January, honored German productions in other categories as well.
