German Caricature Prize goes to Bettina Bexte

Cartoonist and illustrator Bettina Bexte has been awarded the German Cartoon Prize. The artist was honored on Sunday in Bremen for her depiction of a Christmas scene in which a girl receives a pony as a gift thanks to virtual reality. She received the Winged Pencil in Gold, as the organizers announced. The silver prize went to Christina Salz for her vision of a dream woman created with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Austrian cartoonist Oliver Ottitsch was the third prize winner for his work on the trend towards self-optimization.

The motto of the competition was "Data are only human". A total of 293 caricaturists submitted 1329 works. The 18-year-old Anna Luise Sturm from Leipzig was honored as the best young cartoonist. Her caricature shows that the all-knowing robot waiter is perhaps no guarantee for a successful evening after all, it was said. When asked for a wine recommendation, the robot, a walking encyclopaedia, overwhelms the guests with countless facts.

The German Cartoon Prize was launched in 2000 by the "Sächsische Zeitung", the "Weser-Kurier" has been on board since 2016 and the "Rheinische Post" since last year. The prizes are endowed with a total of 11,000 euros.

Many people celebrated Bettina Bexte's win at the German Cartoon Prize, as she received the Winged Pencil in Gold for her depiction of modern technology in art. Art enthusiasts were also intrigued by Christina Salz's silver award-winning piece, which explored the concept of a dream woman created with AI.
