Diseases - Gerlach: Corona situation "currently not a cause for concern"
Despite rising infection figures, Bavaria's Health Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU) does not currently consider the coronavirus situation to be a cause for concern. Although the number of reported corona cases is also rising in Bavaria, Gerlach said in Munich on Thursday. But the increase in respiratory diseases is not unusual in autumn and winter - the State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) has expressly pointed this out. She also emphasized that the omicron subtypes currently circulating rarely trigger severe courses of illness given the generally good immunity situation of the population. Gerlach discussed the current situation with numerous experts on Wednesday.
Most recently, 3508 corona cases were reported to the LGL, compared to 3293 the week before. However, these figures cannot be meaningfully compared with previous figures, for example from the previous year, due to the immunity situation and because far fewer tests are being carried out and reported. There are currently 154 patients with a SARS-CoV-2 infection in the intensive care units of hospitals - they therefore occupy 6.1 percent of all available intensive care beds. There has been stagnation here, explained Gerlach. "The numbers are still at a comparatively low level."
"Fortunately, we are in a completely different situation today than we were at the beginning or in the middle of the pandemic," said Gerlach. "Thanks to the successful vaccination campaign and the infections we have had, we have a very high level of immunity in the population. Personal responsibility and mutual consideration are and will remain crucial." With regard to Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD), Gerlach criticized that it was wrong to unnecessarily unsettle people. However, she called on people over 60, people with pre-existing conditions and medical and nursing staff in particular to check their vaccination status.
"People with pre-existing conditions, for example lung, heart or kidney disease, or people suffering from diabetes mellitus, will particularly benefit from a booster vaccination against Covid-19 in consultation with their doctor," said LGL President Christian Weidner. The President of the Bavarian Medical Association, Gerald Quitterer, warned: "Anyone who is ill should stay at home."
