Bundesliga - Gerhardt with clear words after Wolfsburg defeat
Yannick Gerhardt has identified a mentality problem at Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg after another away defeat. "Away from home has been a disaster so far this year. I feel sorry for the fans who travelled with us, they come here every time and cheer us on - and we always let ourselves be cheated, no matter where we play," the midfielder criticized himself and his team-mates on pay-TV channel Sky after Saturday's 3-1 defeat at VfL Bochum: "We have to work on that as quickly as possible."
Six away defeats in a row put Lower Saxony's European Cup goal in jeopardy early on. "We have to wake up slowly," warned Gerhardt: "We can't afford to sleep through every away game."
In contrast to the 2:1 win against RB Leipzig the week before, the team did not put up much of a fight against Bochum, especially in the first half, said Gerhardt. "Against Leipzig, we know that we're the clear underdogs, we all defend together and we're not too bad at knocking the ball out the back," said the 29-year-old: "Against Bochum, we think we're the better team in terms of soccer. But it's the tackles that count, especially in front of this crowd - and we let them get the better of us in the first half."
