Gera hardest hit by storm damage
Buildings in Gera have been particularly badly damaged by floods, storms and hail in recent decades. From 2022 to 2021, an average of around 5,400 euros of damage per building was caused by storms in the city district, according to the German Insurance Association (GDV) on Tuesday. Among other things, the floods in 2013 caused immense damage.
According to the insurers, the average amount of damage in Altenburger Land was 4000 euros, in the Greiz district it was 3200 euros. In Greiz, too, the June flood in 2013 caused high damage, with an average of 32,700 euros per affected house according to GDV, more than in any other district.
Mild outcome in southwest Thuringia
According to the evaluation, districts in south-western Thuringia in particular got off lightly. In the district of Hildburghausen, the average amount of damage was around 1100 euros, in Gotha it was 1200 euros and in Schmalkalden-Meiningen 1300 euros. In all three districts, storms such as Kyrill in 2007 had a particularly severe impact.
According to the GDV, the national average was 2900 euros per building in 20 years.
In view of the figures, the association called for better protection against natural disasters. "If the federal and state governments do not provide adequate protection for houses and cities, building insurance will become very expensive and many owners and tenants will be considerably burdened," said GDV Managing Director Jörg Asmussen.
In light of the GDV's data, storms have consistently caused significant damage in Gera, with an average of around 5,400 euros per building annually. Given the frequent occurrence of disasters, adequate insurance coverage becomes crucial to mitigate financial losses from such calamities.
