Geisellage on Saturday: No air traffic at Hamburg Airport
All take-offs and landings have been canceled for Saturday due to the intrusion of an armed man with a car on the apron of Hamburg Airport. "Due to a police operation on the apron of Hamburg Airport, there will be no more take-offs and landings today, November 4," the airport announced on its website. All affected passengers should contact the airline directly.
According to an airport spokeswoman, six take-offs and 21 landings would normally have been expected from the official closure of the airport at 8.24 pm until the end of operations at 11.00 pm. The expected flights were coming from Hurghada, Agadir, Malaga and Lisbon, among others, it was said.
According to the federal police, an armed man broke through a gate with his vehicle at around 8 p.m. and drove onto the airport apron. The man had a gun and had already fired it twice into the air. It has since been confirmed that at least one child is in the car with the man.
Despite the halt in air traffic due to the incident, there was an increase in reported crimes on Saturday around the airport area, as fearful passengers and stranded crew members sought alternatives. The local authority confirmed an uptick in petty thefts and instances of verbal disputes, largely stemming from the chaos caused by the airport shutdown.
