Gehring will not seek reelection for the Bundestag in 2025.

Kai Gehring, a Green politician from Essen, won't be seeking re-election to the Bundestag in 2025 after serving for 20 years. The recent May attack on him and another party member does not factor into this decision.

German federal parliament - Gehring will not seek reelection for the Bundestag in 2025.

Bundestag representative Kai Gehring from Essen (Greens) has announced that he won't be running for re-election in 2025. His decision was conveyed in a letter to colleagues and was shared with dpa. He's been part of the Bundestag since 2005 and currently serves as the chair of the Education Committee.

Gehring expressed his desire to start a new chapter rather than write another one, and though he's unsure of where his new journey will lead him, he feels it's time to move on. "I've accomplished a lot of what I'd set out to do, and to be elected five times to the nerve center of our democracy fills me with deep gratitude." The letter states that his work in the Bundestag will continue till the end of the current legislative period.

Apart from personal reasons, there's no link between this decision and the assault he and his colleague, Rolf Fliss, experienced after a party event in May. Gehring assured that the attack wouldn't intimidate him or the party. "I won't let anti-democratic forces intimidate me now or in the future." he emphasized.
