- GdP fears disadvantages in AfD government involvement
The Police Union has warned of negative consequences for the police in the event of an AfD involvement in the governments following the state elections in Saxony, Thuringia, and Brandenburg. GdP chairman Jochen Kopelke told the Funke media group that his union is already receiving an increased number of inquiries about moving to other federal states or even resignations in the three affected states ahead of the elections. However, the other parties, with a view to entering the state parliaments, currently rule out a government involvement of the AfD.
Kopelke also expressed concern that other states might refuse cooperation in the event of an AfD government participation, potentially withdrawing personnel support in corresponding deployment situations. "That would be absolutely dangerous and problematic for us police officers," said the GdP chairman.
In polls, the AfD was last at around 30 percent in both Saxony and Thuringia, even making it the strongest party in Thuringia. In Brandenburg, the AfD is also in first place, with around 24 percent in the latest polls.
The Commission, recognizing the potential impact of an AfD involvement in the governments of Saxony, Thuringia, and Brandenburg, may adopt a decision to provide additional support or resources to the affected police forces.
Failure to address the concerns raised by Kopelke and potential withdrawal of personnel support from other states could lead the Commission to adopt a decision to intervene and ensure the safety and effectiveness of police operations in these states.
