Radical ideologies or actions - GDP demands a moment of silence for slain police officer.
The GdP police union asks everyone in Hamburg to observe a moment of silence in honor of the police officer who was brutally murdered in Mannheim. The 29-year-old was severely wounded by a knife-wielding attacker during an anti-Islam rally the week before and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
In show of unified sorrow and solidarity, all police patrol vehicles will display a wreath while driving. Police boats from the water police will lower their flags or raise a mourning wreath. A minute of silence will be observed on Friday at 11:34 a.m.
Lars Osburg, deputy GdP state chairman, encourages everyone to participate, even drivers. "Simply turn on your hazard lights and pull to the side of the road for a minute of remembrance for the fallen colleague," he said.
The alleged assailant, a 25-year-old man with Afghan citizenship, was shot by another officer. The Federal Prosecutor's Office has now taken control of the investigation.
