GDL calls for warning strike from Thursday evening
Rail travelers are facing the next warning strike by train drivers. From Thursday evening, almost all trains in Germany will come to a standstill. The strike is set to last one day.
The train drivers' union GDL wants to paralyze rail traffic nationwide once again. The next warning strike is due to begin at 10 p.m. on Thursday evening and last until 10 p.m. on Friday evening. This is according to a statement from the union. During this time, almost no trains will be running in Germany.
The collective bargaining round between Deutsche Bahn and GDL began at the start of November. Talks were originally planned for this week and next, but the train drivers' union declared the wage negotiations to have failed a week and a half ago and announced new warning strikes. At the same time, a ballot is being held on more frequent and longer industrial action. Since then, everything has been on hold.
The GDL accuses Deutsche Bahn of not wanting to negotiate its core demand of shorter weekly working hours. In addition to higher wages for shift workers, it wants a 35-hour week, currently 38 hours. Deutsche Bahn does not consider this demand to be feasible.
The uncertainty about possible strikes is "an unpleasant situation for our passengers, especially in the run-up to Christmas," said Deutsche Bahn spokesman Achim Stauß on Tuesday on ARD's "Morgenmagazin".
