Garden owners open their doors to visitors

What does your neighbor's garden actually look like? On Open Garden Day, interested parties can visit the gardens of others, and this year is no exception. But there is one fly in the ointment.

Open Garden Day - Garden owners open their doors to visitors

Small Oasis or great freedom: On Sundays, visitors in Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland can take a peek into other people's gardens. Around 260 gardens participate in the Day of Open Gardens, as Diana Thome from the Horticultural Associations Saarland/Rhineland-Palatinate states.

There isn't a specific theme. "Each person can present their garden as they have arranged it," Thome says. "One may have more vegetable gardens, another more ornamental gardens." The goal is to bring garden culture closer to people, she says. "The gardens show various stylistic directions and focal points. It should be used as an opportunity to exchange ideas and take some away."

This year, the weather in Saarland and southern Rhineland-Palatinate has caused some problems. "Unfortunately, some gardens cannot be visited due to the recent storms," the association shares. Garden enthusiasts, who may have been disappointed by closed garden doors, should not be angry.

On Sundays, visitors can still observe the diversity of regional gardens: a small Asian garden "in the shadow of Buddha" or a "park-like garden with a large tree and shrub population"? On offer is also a nature garden with chickens, ducks, and a small beekeeping facility in Bernkastel-Kues, and a meadow with wild herbs and insects in the district of Birkenfeld.

There is a 1000 square meter landscaped garden, but also a approximately 25 square meter small garden, enclosed by fieldstone walls in the village center of Zeltingen-Rachtig. In addition to gardens in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, there is also a participant in Luxembourg and three in Hesse, it is stated.
