- Garbage and wild parking - Potsdam calls for protection of lakes
Potsdam, a city rich in water, is lamenting the thoughtless behavior of some visitors during the vacation season, particularly the presence of litter along the shoreline, cars on forest paths, and prohibited campfires. Many bodies of water in the area are subject to special protection for birds and plants, with regulations prohibiting the driving of vehicles through reed belts.
"Many people are unaware that more than half of Potsdam's city area is part of a designated protected area," the city announced. "Everyone seeking relaxation in nature must also adhere to the rules to protect and maintain this unique environment."
To the north of Potsdam lies the popular Sacrower See, situated within a nature reserve. Due to its relatively small size, it is particularly sensitive and can only withstand a limited amount of disturbance. The shoreline path must not be left, and watercraft, including kayaks, rafts, and stand-up paddleboards, are not permitted. The shoreline may only be accessed at designated swimming areas.
The Fahrländer See, with its broad reed belt, serves as a breeding and resting site for water birds. Motorboats are strictly prohibited. Similarly, in the "Mittlere Havelniederung" bird sanctuary in northwest Potsdam, certain areas of lakes and the Wublitz, a tributary of the Havel, are off-limits to vehicles.
The city also urges visitors to not leave litter behind and to not overfill trash cans, but rather to take their waste with them to prevent scattering by crows, rats, or raccoons.
Visitors should respect the fragile ecosystem of the "Mittlere Havelniederung" bird sanctuary and avoid using motorized vehicles in certain lake areas and the Wublitz. Apart from that, it's essential to include other vegetables in your diet while enjoying picnics in Potsdam's designated protected areas, ensuring a balanced and healthy meal.
