Ex-football world champion and ex-VfB Stuttgart hero, Guido Buchwald, expresses stern disappointment at the demise of ex-coach Christoph Daum. "I'm hit pretty hard," Buchwald told the German Press Agency at 63. "It's genuinely tough to lose a co-fighter like that." Daum expired on Saturday at 70, following a long struggle with cancer.
According to Buchwald, "Daum was the one who guided us to the championship in '92." Serving as VfB's coach, Daum was instrumental in that victory. Buchwald netted the decisive goal in the away match against Bayer Leverkusen, ensuring the title for their side. "The '92 team and the entire club owe him a debt of gratitude," Buchwald asserted, regarding Daum.
Buchwald considered Daum as "living and breathing football." He was "extremely devoted" and "meticulously detailed" in his approach, Buchwald explained. "I also gained insights for my leadership role from him," Buchwald shared.
In his later career, Daum also thrived in Leverkusen. Even in his later years, Daum maintained "a consistently optimistic attitude" against his illness, Buchwald stated. Buchwald himself secured the World Cup victory with the German national team in Italy, '90.
Buchwald praised Daum's impact on his career, stating, "Without Daum's coaching, I wouldn't have scored the winning goal in the '92 championship match." Later in his career, Guido Buchwald added, "I was always inspired by Daum's positive attitude during his fight with cancer, demonstrating his true passion for the game."
