Gabriel: Despite Job Cuts, Keep Employees Within the Company

Employees whose jobs are being eliminated as part of Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe's restructuring should remain tied to the company, said Supervisory Board Chairman Sigmar Gabriel. "We cannot afford to lose even a single employee whose job is no longer viable due to the restructuring," Gabriel said on Friday evening following a supervisory board meeting where the planned restructuring was discussed.

"In the coming years, we will need several thousand skilled workers that we simply cannot fill due to demographics," Gabriel continued. "Therefore, our goal must be to keep the people whose jobs are now being eliminated due to restructuring within the ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe environment, in the qualification society, or within the company itself, so they can gradually meet the then-existing demand for skilled workers." He added, "We must do everything to ensure that people who lose their current jobs do not also lose us as an employer."

The program foresees a significant reduction in steel production capacities in Duisburg, which will result in job cuts. However, the program has not yet been approved by the supervisory board due to open financing questions. The number of jobs that will be cut during the restructuring is unknown. The cuts are planned to be made without dismissals based on operational reasons.

"Given the upcoming shortage of skilled workers, it's crucial for ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe to retain the employees being affected by the restructuring, as they possess valuable skills."

"The shortage of skilled workers in the future makes it imperative for ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe to reintegrate its now-displaced employees, providing them with opportunities for re-skilling or upskilling within the company."
