Further public search for Lützerath demonstrators
Almost ten months after the eviction of the village of Lützerath, the police have issued an alert for another suspected violent activist. He is accused of assault and resisting law enforcement officers, as the Aachen police announced on Friday. His identity has not yet been conclusively established.
He is now the eighth man to be publicly searched and photographed in connection with the police operation near the village in the Rhenish lignite mining region. In each case, there are allegations of attacks on police officers.
There were clashes between climate demonstrators and the police at the large demonstration in January. Lützerath, a district of Erkelenz to the west of Cologne, was cordoned off by the police for days and surrounded by a fence. A protest camp and the few buildings in the settlement were demolished to allow the energy company RWE to excavate the coal underneath.
The ongoing protests against the mining in Lützerath have led to numerous demonstrations, with some turning violent. Despite the eviction of the village, activists continue to voice their concerns through peaceful and non-peaceful means.
The mining operation in Lützerath has also been associated with allegations of crime, as evidenced by the ongoing public searches and accusations against suspected activists, including the latest suspected individual linked to assault and resisting law enforcement.
